'CALAMAGROSTIS KARL FORSTER' A columnar, cool season, medium-sized, early-blooming ornamental grass, known for its late spring green-pink-purple inflorescence, winter effect, and vertical architectural lines. It is one of the first grasses to come out of winter dormancy. It is very winter hardy to zone 4a which makes this plant a winner for most residents of the USA.

Calamagrostis Acutiflora - Feather Reed Grass

Karl Foerster's feather reed grass is understandably one of the most popular ornamental grasses worldwide. It is beautiful, versatile, and nearly care-free. The deep green, lustrous foliage of this cool-season grower is effective by early spring and lasts into winter. Clump-forming and strictly upright, it produces vertical inflorescences to 6' tall that are loosely feathered and subtly purplish when they first appear in early summer. By late summer they become narrow vertical plumes of a delicate buff color, remaining upright and attractive through most of winter. Suitable for fresh or dry arrangements. This limber grass is one of the best for introducing motion to the garden; it moves gracefully with even a barely perceptible breeze. Always regains its upright posture even after heavy rains and never needs staking. Stunning as a specimen or vertical accent. An excellent screen due to fast growth, reliability, and multi-season duration. Sterility recommends it for large-scale residential or commercial use without fear of compromising adjacent natural areas. No appreciable fall foliage color. Tolerates a wide range of conditions in full sun or up to half shade. Grows best on well-drained fertile soils with adequate moisture, but tolerates heavy clays. May suffer from disfiguring foliar rust diseases in wet summers, especially if air circulation is poor. Cut back to about 5" by early March. Divide or transplant in spring or fall. Plants in containers make attractive specimens and survive most winters without protection.
