Arundo Giant Reed Grass

'ARUNDO' Vigorous , upright, arching canes that can reach 15 feet tall (see pic). The blue green foliage is 2" to 3" wide and grows 18" to 24" long. The foliage clasps the hollow cane like stem. These stems were used to make reeds for wind instruments, hence the name. Flowers are puffy panicles 18" tall and 6" wide. They emerge in September in the south but may not emerge before frost in the north. Turns beige with the first frost and can make an attractive winter display. Height and flowering time vary based upon the zone, with northern zones having a shorter growing period and later bloom time.

Also, long a source of reeds for wind instruments, this Mediterranean native grows larger and taller than any other grass hardy in cool temperate regions, excepting the bamboos. Even in regions like th northeastern United States where it dies to the ground each winter, it can attain 14' tall in a single season. It may reach 18' tall in warm regions where it remains evergreen. Stems upright, leaves coarse, gray green, to 3" wide. Inflorescences bloom with a pink cast drying to silver.
